Vaulted roof of the monks' common room, Battle Abbey, East Sussex, c2000s(?). The Benedictine abbey of Battle was founded by William the Conquerer on the site of the Battle of Hastings. Following the dissolution of the monasteries, part of its buildings were adapted as a country house.
