St Augustine's Abbey during construction, c11th century, (c1990-2010). Reconstruction drawing St Augustine's Benedictine Abbey, Canterbury, Kent under Norman construction. The abbey was founded in 598 and functioned as a monastery until its dissolution in 1538 during the English Reformation. Following Norman Conquest of England in 1066, William the Conqueror confiscated landed estates, but respected Church property, the Anglo-Saxon buildings were completely reconstructed in the form of a typical Norman Benedictine monastery.
