Castlerigg Stone Circle, Keswick, Allerdale, Cumbria, c1955-1980. View of the stone circle, looking south-east and showing the smaller stone enclosure inside the main circle. Castlerigg Stone Circle dates from between the Late Neolithic period and and Middle Bronze Age period (c2400-1000BC). This site has a large oval-shaped enclosure composed of around 41 stones, some of which have fallen, and some are smaller stones. It measures approximately 32m north-south and 29m east-west, and in the south-eastern corner is a rectangular-shaped internal enclosure, which is focussed on in the imge. The stone circle has been in the care of the state since 1883, and is currently cared for by English Heritage.
