Pearl Assurance Building, Northumberland Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, c1955-c1980. An exterior view of the former Pearl Assurance Building and New Bridge Street West, seen from a high vantage from the west, possibly from the balcony of the Earl Grey Monument. The image shows the former Pearl Assurance Building, which had five storeys throughout, and additional attics in the round corner in the south-west side of the building. The window bays on the second and third floor of the corner are canted, as are the windows on the second floor of the west elevation. Between the west side and corner is a tower with polygonal parapet and domed roof with tall openings underneath. The ground floor has shop fronts, and a sign which reads 'Pearl Assurance Building' above the first floor of the corner, and above a door at the base of the tower. The building was replaced with a brutalist construction of the same name, possibly in the late 1960s to early 1970s.
