'Samson Slaying a Philistine', Seaton Delaval, Northumberland, c1955-c1980. A detail of a statue in the west garden of Seaton Delaval Hall, showing Samson Slaying a Philistine, a Biblical story from the Book of Judges in the Old Testament. The sculpture is lead on an ashlar plinth, and dates from the 18th century. The artist is unknown. The life-size figures are twisted around each other as Samson stands over the Philistine with a weapon in his raised right hand. He holds his opponent's hair with his left hand to pull the head back. The house and grounds are now under the care of the National Trust.
