Légende
Fantascope disc, 1833. The Fantascope or Phenakistoscope was an optical toy depending on persistence of vision for its effect. This disc shows multiple images of a man and woman dancing a polka. When the picture is spun on a spindle and turned on its side in front of a looking glass (mirror) the image gives the impression that the couple are moving. From Fantascope published by Ackermann and Co. (London, 1833).
