Miss Nightingale and the Military in the East', c1860. Florence Nightingale in the British military hospital at Scutari during the Crimean War (1853-1856). The doctor is taking a patient's pulse. In 1854, Sidney Herbert, Secretary of State for War, appointed the English nurse Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), a family friend, to introduce female nurses into the British military hospitals in the Crimea. Until the end of the war she worked tirelessly to improve conditions.
