Karl Guthe Jansky, American physicist and radio engineer, c1940. In 1932, while carrying out research into static that might interfere with voice radio transmissions, Jansky (1905-1950) discovered that the Milky Way emitted radio waves, a discovery which marked the birth of radio astronomy.
