Lazzaro Spallanzani, 18th century Italian naturalist and biologist, 1874. Spallanzani (1729-1799) investigating the digestive system of the chicken. He proved that microbes came from the air and could be killed by boiling, paving the way for the later work of Louis Pasteur.
