Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire, from above the bridge, c1795. On the left, where many masts are shown, is the entrance to the Staffordshire and Worcester Canal. With the coming of canals in England after 1772 Stourport, at the junction of the rivers Stour and Severn, grew from just an ale house into a thriving port. Illustration by Samuel Ireland (d1800) for his Picturesque Views of the River Severn (c1795).
