Cizhou-type tea slop basin, Southern Song, China, 1127-1279. Large black glazed basin with straight sides and flat everted rim. The thick orange-peel like glaze covers 2/3 of the exterior and ends with large 'tear drops'. The rim and parts of the glaze elsewhere are somewhat suffused to a cafe au lait colour. The unglazed base shows the buff-grey coloured stoneware formerly associated with Henan kilns. The body shows that the clay body was extensively knife-pared before being glazed. The piece was probably a slop basin for tea slops/leaves.
