Red lacquer peach-shaped box, Qing dynasty, China, 18th century. Covered box with undecorated internal segmented tray. The red box is painted in black with a large crane, bats and prunus sprays. The crane is the companion of the God of Longevity, Shou Lao, and is often used as a symbol of long life. The peach is another common motif to represent longevity.
