Moulded ink cake, Ming dynasty, China, 1622. An almost square moulded ink cake with scholar and servant by a Ming style table, behind which is a large screen with landscape decoration. Some traces of gilding remain. The moulded side has a nine character inscription dating to the first year of Tianqi (1622) which states that the piece was made under the supervision of Qeng Jun Fang - a very famous inkstone maker from Anhui province.
