Corries in the Black Cuillin Hills, Isle of Skye, Scotland, 20th century. A corrie, is the Scottish term for the French word 'Cirque' used to describe a valley, land formed by glacial erosion. The peaks of the Black Cuillin are mainly composed of gabbro, a rough black igneous rock which provides superb grip for mountaineers, and basalt, which can be slippery when wet.
