Légende
Mesembryanthemum, 20th century. A genus of flowering plants indigenous to southern Africa, it is characterised by long-lasting flower heads which protect their gametes from night-time dews and frosts but open in sunlight. There is an obvious evolutionary advantage in reducing exposure and closing may be advantageous during times when flowers are unlikely to attract pollinators.
