'Christ Appearing to Saint Peter on the Appian Way', 1601-1602. The legend is that during Nero's persecution of the Christians St Peter fled from Rome. On the Appian Way he had a vision of Christ carrying a cross. He returned to Rome and was martyred. From the National Gallery, London.
