'The Education of Achilles: The Riding Lesson', 17th century. Achilles' riding master is a centaur, a legendary creature with the body of a horse and the torso of a man. Achilles is mounted on the centaur who is pointing with his whip to a spirited dappled grey horse. Achilles, hero of Homer's Iliad, in Greek legend was son of Thetis, chief Nereid (sea nymph) by Peleus, King of the Myrmidons.
