St Jerome', late 16th-early 17th century. Jerome, in the act of self-flagellation, gazes up in ecstasy into a shaft of light. Behind him is a crucifix with an image of Christ, and a skull as a memento mori. Born Eusebius Hieronymus Sophronius, t Jerome (c342-420) was a leading father of the Christian church. He prepared the first Latin translation of the Bible from Hebrew (Vulgate). From a private collection.
