'The Death of Socrates', 4th century BC, (1787). Socrates (469-399 BC) the Greek philosopher was found guilty of 'impiety' and of 'corrupting the youth'. He rejected the option of paying a fine and an opportunity to escape from prison, and submitted to his sentence of death by drinking hemlock.
