'The Assumption of the Virgin', c1475-1476. In the foreground the Apostles group around the Virgin's tomb full of Madonna lilies. At the top, Christ, enthroned amongst three circles of angels welcomes her into the highest circle of Heaven. Figures kneeling on the ground are Matteo Palmieri (left), a Florentine civil servant, and his wife Niccolosa (right). Originally the altarpiece in Palmieri's chapel in San Pier Maggiore, Florence, today the painting is in the National Gallery, London.
