Searchlight operators preparing for a night bombing raid, Moscow, 1941. The Luftwaffe launched its first air raid on Moscow on 22 July 1941. Searchlights and anti-aircraft fire limited the effectiveness of the attack. The Germans continued to bomb Moscow but were unsuccessful in achieving Hitler's aim of reducing the city to rubble.
