'A Young Girl from the Sandwich Isle', 18th century. The Sandwich Islands was the name given to Hawaii by Captain James Cook after he voyaged there in 1778. They were named after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, who was First Lord of the Admiralty and sponsor of Cook's expedition.
