King Behanzin of Dahomey, 1893. The last independent king of Dahomey, Behanzin resisted French colonial expansion into his country. The French emerged victorious from a war fought between 1892 and 1894 and Behanzin spent the remainder of his life in exile with his kingdom a French colony.
