'Isabella and the Pot of Basil', c1867. Scene inspired by The Decameron by the Italian Renaissance poet Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375). Isabella's brothers murder her lover Lorenzo. When she discovers Lorenzo's body, she cuts off the head, buries it in a pot of basil and waters it with her tears.
