Légende
Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales, 19th century. The princess (1796-1817) was the only child of the marriage between George IV and Caroline of Brunswick. After giving birth to a stillborn son, she died of post-partum haemorrhage and shock. The royal obstetrician, Sir Richard Croft, who had failed to use forceps during the labour, committed suicide. The public outpouring of grief at the loss of the popular princess was not matched until the death of Princess Diana in 1997.
