'Saratoga and Stillwater, Encampments of Burgoyne's Army', 1777, (1872). The Battle(s) of Saratoga were considered by many historians to have been the turning point of the American Revolutionary War and one of the most decisive battles in history. British General John Burgoyne's reinforcements failed to arrive and he was forced to surrender. The loss of the battle was a major setback to the British forces. Engraving from John Gilmary Shea's A Child's History of the United States, Hess and McDavitt, (New York, 1872).
