Sir Charles Wheatstone, British inventor, (1899). Wheatstone (1802-1875) was a pioneer of electric telegraphy. In 1837, he and William Fothergill Cooke patented their five-needle telegraph machine, the first successful electric telecommunication device. Wheatstone received a knighthood in 1868.
