French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau in Versailles, France 3 June 1918. Clemenceau (1841-1929) was appointed Prime Minister of France in November 1917. He worked tirelessly to restore French morale, damaged by the disastrous Nivelle offensive and the mutinies that followed it, and persuaded the Allies to accept a unified military command under General Ferdinand Foch.
