General Sir William Birdwood being recived by the mayor of Lille, October 1918, (1926). General Birdwood and his troops were welcomed by joyous crowds in Lille on 17 October 1918 as they entered the city, which had been occupied by the Germans since 1914. The general was made an honorary citizen of Lille on 28 October.
