Légende

Michel-Joseph Maunoury, French First World War general, (1926). Maunoury, (1847-1923), was recalled from retirement at the outset of the war to lead the so-called 'Army of Lorraine', intended to retake the province of Lorraine lost to Germany in the Franco-Prussian War. As events unfolded his force was redeployed, playing a crucial role in halting the German advance at the Battle of the Marne which saved Paris. Maunoury's active career was ended when he was severely wounded while touring the front on 11 March 1915. He was posthumously promoted to Marshal of France in 1923.
