Thomas Hughes, 1880. The author of Tom Brown's School Days, first published in 1856. In 1861 he went on to publish Tom Brown at Oxford. He was one of the founder members of the Society for Promoting Working Men's Associations. He became an MP for Lambeth in 1865-1868, and appointed a member of the queens' counsel in 1869. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
