John Callcott Horsley, artist and Royal Academician, 1882. A historical and genre painter, Horsley (1817-1903) gained the nickname 'Clothes Horsley' for his role in championing the cause of public decency against painting from life classes and nudity in art in general. He also, in 1843, designed the first Christmas card. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
