John Scott Russell, civil engineer and naval architect, 1878. After leaving Scotland for London in 1844 he constructed four large steamships, the 'Teviot', 'Tay', 'Clyde' and 'Tweed' for the West India Royal Mail Company. Russell also designed the 'Great Eastern' in collaboration with Brunel. He was one of the founders of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
