John of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Bedford, (18th century). The third surviving son of Henry IV, John of Lancaster (1389-1435) governed England as regent for his nephew Henry VI from 1422 until 1437. He fought against the French and had Joan of Arc burned at the stake in 1431. He was an important commissioner of illuminated manuscripts, notably the Bedford Hours.
