'The Apotheosis of the Duchess of Devonshire', 1784. Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, flanked by Truth and Virtue, tramples Scandal underfoot. The duchess was famous for her beauty, her political campaigning, gambling, and unorthodox domestic arrangements. Her best friend was also her husband's mistress, and Georgiana tolerated a menage a trois for many years. She herself bore a child out of wedlock.
