Légende
Ahmed Orabi Pasha, Egyptian general and rebel, 1900. Ahmed Orabi was an Egyptian general who rebelled against the rule of the khedive and European domination of Egypt in 1879 in what came to be known as the Orabi Revolt. Fearing that Egypt under Orabi might default on loans and close the Suez Canal, the British invaded in 1883. Orabi was captured after his army was defeated at the Battle of Tel al-Kebir. The khedive sentenced him to death, but under British pressure the sentence was commuted and he was exiled to Ceylon for the rest of his life. Portrait in AM Broadley's "How we Defended Arabi and his Friends." A print from "The Life and Times of Queen Victoria", by Robert Wilson, Volume IV, Cassell and Company, London, Paris, New York, Melbourne, 1900.
