The old observing-room, Greenwich, late 17th century (1893). The Royal Observatory at Greenwich was founded in 1675 by King Charles II, with John Flamsteed appointed as the first Astronomer Royal. The building, with its octagonal observing room, was designed by Sir Christopher Wren.
