Haruho, Empress of Japan, 1873 (1882). The wife of the Emperor Meiji (Mutsuhito, Emperor of Japan) (1852-1912) Emperor of Japan from 1867, pictured in full court dress. A pioneer of Japanese photography, Uchida Kyuichi was the first and only photographer to be given the opportunity to take the portraits of the emperor and empress.
