Men of the 'Never Never land', in totem attire, Australia, 1922. The tufted sticks rising from the heads of the men in the second row are in the nature of 'nurtunjas', or totem poles, and have much magical meaning. From Peoples of All Nations, Their Life Today and the Story of Their Past, volume I: Abyssinia to the British Empire, edited by JA Hammerton and published by the Educational Book Company (London, 1922).
