King Haakon VII of Norway (1872-1957) with his wife Queen Maud (869-1938), 1908. Haakon ruled in Norway for 52 years. Born a prince of Denmark, he ascended to the throne in 1905 after the union with Sweden was brought to an end. He was the second son of Queen Alexandra's brother Frederick (later Frederick VIII of Denmark). Having originally been known as Prince Carl, he was always called Charles by members of the British royal family. He married his cousin Maud, the youngest daughter of Edward and Alexandra, in 1896. From Queen Alexandra's Christmas Gift Book, Photographs from My Camera, by Queen Alexandra, published by The Daily Telegraph (London, 1908).
