Chartist riots at Newport, Wales, 1839 (c1895). The Newport Rising was the last large scale armed rebellion against authority in mainland Britain. It occurred on 4 November 1839 when somewhere between 1,000 and 5,000 armed coal miners marched on the town of Newport, intent on liberating the Chartist prisoners held under armed guard in the town's Westgate Hotel.
