The Grand Duke Nicholas announcing the treaty of peace, San Stefano, Turkey, 19th century. The Preliminary Treaty of San Stefano was a treaty between Russia and the Ottoman Empire signed at the end of the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-78. The treaty also established Bulgaria as an autonomous principality. From Cassell's Illustrated History of England, volume X, published by Cassell, Petter, Galpin and Co.
