The construction of Chepstow castle began shortly after the Norman invasion, and was overseen by William the Conqueror's castle builder, William FitzOsbern, Earl of Hereford. It is thought to be one of the first examples of a stone built castle in Britain. A print from Hutchinson's Britain Beautiful, edited by Walter Hutchinson, volume III, 1924-1926.
