The house was built in c1795 for Hercules Ross, a Scottish merchant who made a fortune in Jamaica, became a friend of Nelson and became a supporter of the campaign for the abolition of the slave trade. Wood-engraved plates after paintings by Benjamin Fawcett and Alexander Francis Lydon.
