Légende

Arrest of William Franklin, New Jersey, 1776 (c1880). The illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin, William Franklin (1731-1813) was colonial governor of New Jersey when the America Revolution began. A staunch loyalist, he was arrested by order of the Provincial Congress of New Jersey and held as a prisoner of war until 1778. After his release he moved to New York, which remained in the hands of the British. In 1782, after the United States had secured its independence, Franklin left for England, never to return. A print from Cassell's History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume II, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880.
