Washington taking leave of his old comrades, 1783 (c1880). With the independence of the Uniyed States secured by the Treaty of Paris, George Washington said farewell to his officers at Fraunces Tavern in New York on 4th December 1783. On 23rd December he formally resigned his commission as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army.
