King Umberto I, King of Italy of Italy, 1900. Umberto I became King of Italy in 1878. He became widely unpopular after he sent a telegram congratulating General Fiorenzo Bava-Beccaris for his action in firing cannon on demonstrators protesting about the price of bread in Milan on 7th May 1898, and was assassinated by Gaetano Bresci, an anarchist, on 9th August 1900.
