Goethe, German poet, 19th century (1956). Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a novelist, dramatist, poet, humanist, scientist, philosopher, and for ten years chief minister of state at Weimar. He is best known for his dramatic poem Faust, completed in 1832.
