John D Rockefeller, American industrialist, late 19th century (1956). Rockefeller (1839-1937) made his fortune in the petroleum industry. He founded Standard Oil in 1870 and ran it until he retired in 1897. After his retirement from business, Rockefeller devoted himself to philanthropic works. A print from People, a volume about the origin and early history of many things, common and less common, essential and inessential, by Readers Union, the Grosvenor Press, London, 1956.
