Siege of Marseilles by Julius Caesar, 1882-1884. The city of Marseilles was founded as Massalia in c600 by the Greeks. In Roman times it was an independent city affiliated to Rome and an important centre for trade between Rome and Gaul. Massalia lost its independence in 49 BC after it sided with Pompey and his allies in the civil war against Julius Caesar, whose armies captured the city after a four month siege. A print from La France et les Français à Travers les Siècles, Volume I, F Roy editor, Saint-Antoine, 1882-1884.
